Sociology is a theoretical and empirical discipline that examines social life, social change, social causes, and the consequences of human behavior. The increasing importance of this discipline is concomitant with the rapid social, economic, technological, political, and cultural changes of the present day.
The department commenced the acceptance of students within the scope of the undergraduate program during the 2006–2007 academic year. Graduates who successfully complete the program are awarded a bachelor's degree in sociology.
Our Vision and Mission
The department's vision aligns with the university's mission and is characterized by several key principles. Firstly, it aspires to attain academic respectability through the provision of education in the field of sociology that meets universal standards. Secondly, it seeks to generate added value by addressing both local and national needs. Thirdly, it is committed to the principles of entrepreneurship and innovation in order to produce knowledge. Finally, it aims to achieve international recognition in research and development.
The mission of the department is to provide an academic and intellectual environment that will help students gain the best possible professional knowledge, skills, and experience in theoretical and methodological issues and in sociological research. In this context, the compulsory and elective courses offered in our program, which provides education in the field of sociology—a discipline with a broad field of interest and study—provide our students with an academic education in theoretical and empirical studies on various areas of social life, including family, economy, politics, culture, religion, education, violence, media, law, health, and music, among others.
Departmental Facilities
Our department currently offers our students the opportunity to attend courses at various universities abroad as well as at various universities in Turkey through the Erasmus, Farabi and Mevlana Student Exchange Programs. In accordance with the framework of the Erasmus international exchange program, student exchanges are executed in accordance with the agreement between our Department and the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Human Sciences, Karoli Gaspar Reformed Church University in Hungary and the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Rzeszow University in Poland. Students who achieve a certain score on the university's annual foreign language proficiency exam are eligible to enroll in courses at these two universities for up to two semesters, contingent on the availability of spots within the designated quotas.
Students in our department have the opportunity to pursue a dual major and minor in the History and Turkish Language Departments of our Faculty, as well as a minor in the Psychology Department, contingent upon fulfilling the stipulated criteria established by our institution. The department also admits students from other faculties and departments for dual major and minor education. The conditions and quotas stipulated in the relevant YÖK and B.A.İ.B.Ü regulations are applicable in this case. Advisors are responsible for developing a suitable course of study for each student and providing guidance on the selection and enrollment in necessary courses, ensuring students' timely graduation from their respective programs.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the undergraduate program who successfully complete their studies acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to secure employment in a variety of roles related to the field in both public and private institutions. These roles include positions such as research specialist, advertiser, public relations specialist, human resources specialist, and sociologist within private companies or government agencies.
